Are you interested in volunteering with us? We can certainly use your help!!
As T&E Care continues to grow - we have many ways that we could use help of community members. Besides needing your help with donations of money and "stuff", we could use YOU! If you'd like to get more involved - here are some of the many areas we can use help. We promise we will not abuse your offer of help! Contact us if you want to get involved!
Administrative Assistance for T&E Care
Grant writing- there are definitely grants out there that we would qualify for, but we need help finding them and completing the required papers.
Development/Business solicitations - If you are comfortable asking people or businesses for donations - then we could REALLY use your help. We know that there are local businesses who would be willing to support local organizations such as ours, but we need help reaching out to them.
Do you have good publicity skills? We could use help putting out press releases, doing brochures, etc.
Websites/facebook - If you are comfortable working on simple websites, and/or if you love facebook and would be willing to offer help on this - let us know.
Do you have good computer skills? We use excel to keep track of a lot of our information and could always use people to help organize our materials.
Do you feel comfortable working on computers? We take old computers and refurbish them for families, and take new laptops and get them ready to give to college kids. We always can use someone with good IT skills. We also like people who are good with the basics of computers so when we give a computer to a family - we can offer assistance setting it up. Could you help with any of these?
CPA/Auditing - we sometimes need help at tax time with various tax forms. We also can always use the skills of someone who is good with numbers as we grow in size and budget.
Thank you notes - if you are looking for a volunteer job that allows you to stay at home with your kids - this is the place for you! We are often needing to write thank you notes for donations made to T&E Care and would love some help with these.
Helping directly with a family
Do you understand the college application process? We like to have different mentors working with college students who are struggling with FAFSA applications, the general financial aid process, and whatever it takes to make decisions about college. You don't need to be a professional - if you've had a child go through this process and you found it easy to follow - that's plenty good!
Legal advice- some families run into situations that require legal advice of all different sorts - divorce, employment, foreclosure, etc. etc. If you are a lawyer (or know one) who could give us a little time now and then, we'd really appreciate hearing from you!
Construction skills - many of the homes the families live in are in a bad state of disrepair. If you are a handyman or contractor, or have skills doing minor electrical or plumbing work, please let us know!
Financial skills - if you are good with budgeting, we would love to hook you up with a family and help them work through some financial difficulties that might be hindering their path to a better future.
Summer Camp Assistance - each spring we offer summer camp assistance to local families, and we ask for a few volunteers to help coordinate the registrations and payments.
Job assistance - if you have human resource skills (can look at resumes, can offer advise on interviewing, etc.) we would love to put your name on our list. Often helping people get new jobs is the most important step to getting them back on their feet!
Do you like to drive? Now and then we are asked to offer a ride for a family or child without access to transportation. If you could be called on to help with that now and then, we'd really appreciate it!
Do you like to work with kids? We are always looking for people with extra time who could be a "big brother" or "big sister" to some local kids.
Do you like to tutor? We occasionally get requests from families looking for extra tutoring help for their child/children. If this is something you'd be willing to offer, we'd love to hear from you!
Do you have social work skills? We love to know people who understand the general government bureaucracy in applying for assistance - when a person is struggling this can be a huge mountain for them to climb alone.
Helping with a T&E Care program or event
Do you like to throw a party? Each fall we run our big fund raiser and need lots of volunteers to help with this! Help is needed in planning decorations and activities for the party, as well as soliciting for auction prizes and sponsors. Creating the program booklet, doing record keeping, sending invitations, and keeping track of volunteers are other potential areas of assistance. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Do you have a truck, large SUV, or van? We provide furniture to families who have moved to a "new" home in this area and have no furniture, or just need a new bed or some sort of furniture. We would love to call on you for help moving things when we learn of such a need. Let us know at email@example.com
Do you like to help with projects? We run a number of programs during the year that are labor intensive. These include
our School Supply Drive (we start to organize in March/April, the drive itself is much of July, and the actual sorting event is at the end of July) - questions: firstname.lastname@example.org
our Holiday Drive (we start to organized in late September, the drive runs from mid November through early December and our big sorting time is the 1st or 2nd week of December) - questions: email@example.com
our Holiday Dinners - we help families at both Thanksgiving and around Christmas with special meals - we organize a month or so before the actual holiday and deliver the food just prior to the holiday.
our Kids' Clothing Grab Bag (we start to organize in January and run the event sometime in the late winter/early spring [date changes based on Spring Break]) - questions: firstname.lastname@example.org
our Camp Assistance Program (we start to organize in January and run the program throughout the spring) - questions: email@example.com
our Stuff Program - this runs all year long where we help families who have asked for help getting household items; it is NOT labor intensive all the time - just whenever such a request comes in. Questions: firstname.lastname@example.org
Other types of assistance
Auto skills - many of the families we support have OLD cars, or they are looking to buy a used car. We could really use the advice of a mechanic (or someone who knows cars) now and then!
Do you have time? We have lots of things that you could do that just need TIME. From helping with projects to being a liaison to a family - we'd love to find out what your interests are.
Do you love to shop (and get good bargains)? We have to get items for families now and then, and it takes time to go shopping and find the best bargains. If you love to shop, you may be the right person for us.
Other skills - we know there are other ways people can help - let us know what your skills are and how we can best use your talent!
Remember - if everyone does a little, no one does a lot!
More information about clearances required under the Child Protective Services Law can be found at www.keepkidssafe.pa.gov. Individuals seeking clearances can go directly to www.compass.state.pa.us/cwis to create an individual account and apply for their child abuse clearance electronically.
All volunteers who work directly with kids are required by the state of PA and T&E Care to get both a Child Abuse History Clearance Check and a Criminal Background Record Check. These applications are not complicated to complete. Additionally, anyone who has not lived in the state of PA for at least 10 consecutive years must get an FBI clearance. Residents of PA for 10 years or more can just fill out a witnessed affidavit in lieu of doing the FBI clerance. A copy of the affidavit is below.
IF you have already gotten the required clearances for a job and/or another volunteer capacity - you don't need to apply again - just send us all the final paperwork for each of the clearances. IMPORTANT NOTE: if you are applying to the TESD to do volunteer work, do those applications FIRST and send us the copies. It has a slightly different process and can't accept our applications, but we can accept theirs. This is especially true for anyone needing the FBI clearance.
Remember that all clearances must be updated every 5 years. Best if they can all be done in the same year so your record-keeping is made easier.
For the Criminal Background Check You MUST do this application FIRST. Go to https://epatch.state.pa.us/Home.jsp and you will get the on-line application. Once you get it confirmed you just need to send that confirmation to us for our records. Be sure to keep going all the way to the end in order to receive the official certificate of clearance! A copy of this clearance certificate must be included with your child abuse application below. (It can all be done very quickly by email. If you mail in the Criminal Background Records Check Policy, it may take 2-3 weeks to receive the certificate.) There is a $10 fee for this application, which will be waived starting in July 2015.
For the Child Abuse Application Once you have the criminal background check certificate, then go to https://www.compass.state.pa.us/cwis/public/home. You can download the Child Abuse form there. This application can NOT be done online - you MUST mail it in. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to receive your clearances. There is another $10 fee for this application which will be waived starting in July 2015. (NOTE: this $10 fee needs to be a money order. You can get these at any local grocery store. There is often a $1 fee to do so. Don't forget to sign and fill out the money form before mailing it in.)
For the FBI Clearances - if you've lived in PA 10 or more years:
You will not need to complete an FBI clearance form if you have lived in PA 10 or more years. You WILL need to submit an affidavit (download below) to T&E Care. This affidavit will need to be witnessed. You can mail it to us at T&E Care, PO Box 2111, Southeastern, PA 19399, or scan/email it to us at email@example.com.
For the FBI Clearances - if you've lived in PA less than 10 years:
Volunteers who have lived in PA less than 10 years must obtain an FBI Federal Criminal History Clearance which also requires fingerprint submission. The steps to get this clearance include:
Go through the online registration process - it could take 10-15 minutes to complete the form. IMPORTANT NOTE: one of the required options ask you why you need to get your fingerprints done. The option you should choose is: Employment with the liklihood of contact with children. We called and confirmed that this is the right option. There is no option about volunteering - we were told that in their minds employment and volunteering are the same. Strange minds!
Once you have completed the form, print out the last screen where it says you have completed registration.
The clearance costs $27.50 (as of May 2015). The fee can be paid online with a credit card.
Once you have your registration ID number - then you need to take that number (as well as a passport or driver's license) to a fingerprint agency. The closest one to our area is the UPS Store in Gateway Shopping Center. There is no additional charge here - just be sure to take the ID number and your ID. Hours are Monday-Friday 10-6, Saturday 10-4. Closed Sunday.
In 48 hours you can see your results online. A written receipt will come in the mail in 2 weeks.
T&E Care must have a copy of the written receipt before you can do any volunteering with children.
Special volunteer needs - drivers wanted! Every summer T&E Care will be helping some local kids attend summer camp by covering their tuition costs. Most kids in our community get to go to overnight camps or Future Stars or art camp for a week or two (or more), and then go on a vacation as well. Fun stuff! But many of the kids in the families we support just sit home day after day throughout the summer - no camp and certainly no vacation. Paying for a week or two of camp is a special treat! We also like to offer help with transportation for some of these kids. The parents work, or they don't even own a car, and even if we pay for the camp - the kids still can't get there. Each year we have about a dozen kids who needed rides - all to local camps - so it doesn't take a lot of volunteers. If you could help out as a camp driver - please send a note to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will collect names, and then once we get the schedules for the kids (in May or early June) we'll try to match up your availability with the required dates. Please note that all drivers need appropriate insurance and will be required to get a child abuse and a criminal background check. (See above for information on these requirements.)
Possible Home Make-over Projects
Some families are living in homes that need many repairs, with no way to afford them. As we work with some of these families, we hope to offer help fixing up their homes. If you have any skills related to home repair: painting, plumbing, electrical, general contractor, etc. we'd love to hear from you. If we identify a particular family needing support, then we'll contact you for assistance. If you are just a regular person who would love to offer assistance for one of these projects - we'd love to hear from you, too! There are all sorts of ways that everyone can help out! Thanks!
