Are you interested in volunteering with us?
We can certainly use your help!!

As T&E Care continues to grow - we have many ways that we could use help of community members. Besides needing your help with donations of money and "stuff", we could use YOU! If you'd like to get more involved - here are some of the many areas we can use help. We promise we will not abuse your offer of help! Contact us if you want to get involved!

Administrative Assistance for T&E Care
  • Grant writing- there are definitely grants out there that we would qualify for, but we need help finding them and completing the required papers.
  • Development/Business solicitations - If you are comfortable asking people or businesses for donations - then we could REALLY use your help.  We know that there are local businesses who would be willing to support local organizations such as ours, but we need help reaching out to them.
  • Do you have good publicity skills? We could use help putting out press releases, doing brochures, etc.
  • Websites/facebook - If you are comfortable working on simple websites, and/or if you love facebook and would be willing to offer help on this - let us know.
  • Do you have good computer skills?  We use excel to keep track of a lot of our information and could always use people to help organize our materials.
  • Do you feel comfortable working on computers?  We take old computers and refurbish them for families, and take new laptops and get them ready to give to college kids.  We always can use someone with good IT skills.  We also like people who are good with the basics of computers so when we give a computer to a family - we can offer assistance setting it up.  Could you help with any of these?
  • CPA/Auditing - we sometimes need help at tax time with various tax forms.  We also can always use the skills of someone who is good with numbers as we grow in size and budget.
  • Thank you notes - if you are looking for a volunteer job that allows you to stay at home with your kids - this is the place for you!  We are often needing to write thank you notes for donations made to T&E Care and would love some help with these.

Helping directly with a family

  • Do you understand the college application process? We like to have different mentors working with college students who are struggling with FAFSA applications, the general financial aid process, and whatever it takes to make decisions about college.
  • Legal advice- some families run into situations that require legal advice of all different sorts - divorce, employment, foreclosure, etc. etc. If you are a lawyer (or know one) who could give us a little time now and then, we'd really appreciate hearing from you!
  • Construction skills - many of the homes the families live in are in a bad state of disrepair. If you are a handyman or contractor, or have skills doing minor electrical or plumbing work, please let us know!
  • Financial skills - if you are good with budgeting, we would love to hook you up with a family and help them work through some financial difficulties that might be hindering their path to a better future.
  • Summer Camp Assistance - each spring we offer summer camp assistance to local families, and we ask for a few volunteers to help coordinate the registrations and payments.
  • Job assistance - if you have human resource skills (can look at resumes, can offer advise on interviewing, etc.) we would love to put your name on our list. Often helping people get new jobs is the most important step to getting them back on their feet!
  • Do you like to drive?  Now and then we are asked to offer a ride for a family or child without access to transportation.  If you could be called on to help with that now and then, we'd really appreciate it!
  • Do you like to work with kids?  We are always looking for people with extra time who could be a "big brother" or "big sister" to some local kids.
  • Do you like to tutor?  We frequently get requests from families looking for extra tutoring help for their child/children.  If this is something you'd be willing to offer, we'd love to hear from you!
  • Do you have social work skills?  We love to know people who understand the general government bureaucracy in applying for assistance - when a person is struggling this can be a huge mountain for them to climb alone.

Helping with a T&E Care program or event

  • Do you like to throw a party?  Each fall we run our big fund raiser and need lots of volunteers to help with this!  Help is needed in planning decorations and activities for the party, as well as soliciting for auction prizes and sponsors.  Creating the program booklet, doing record keeping, sending invitations, and keeping track of volunteers are other potential areas of assistance.  Contact us at fallfest@tecare.org.
  • Do you have a truck, large SUV, or van? We provide furniture to families who have moved to a "new" home in this area and have no furniture, or just need a new bed or some sort of furniture. We would love to call on you for help moving things when we learn of such a need.  Let us know at stuff@tecare.org
  • Do you like to help with projects?  We run a number of programs during the year that are labor intensive.  These include our school supply drive (May through August), our holiday drive (October through December), and our Kid Clothing Grab Bag (January through April).   We'll always welcome additional offers of help with these projects!  Direct links to these groups include:  schoolsupply@tecare.org, clothes@tecare.org or holidays@tecare.org.

Other types of assistance

  • Auto skills - many of the families we support have OLD cars, or they are looking to buy a used car. We could really use the advice of a mechanic (or someone who knows cars) now and then!
  • Do you have time? We have lots of things that you could do that just need TIME.  From helping with projects to being a liaison to a family - we'd love to find out what your interests are.
  • Do you love to shop (and get good bargains)? We have to get items for families now and then, and it takes time to go shopping and find the best bargains. If you love to shop, you may be the right person for us.
  • Other skills - we know there are other ways people can help - let us know what your skills are and how we can best use your talent!
Remember - if everyone does a little, no one does a lot!

Getting a Child Abuse History Clearance Report and a Criminal Background Record Check.

All volunteers who work directly with kids are required by T&E Care to get both a Child Abuse History Clearance Check and a Criminal Background Record Check.  These are very easy to get, and we can cover both $10 fees if needed.  Please contact us for assistance if needed.

For the Criminal Background Check
You MUST do this application FIRST.  Go to https://epatch.state.pa.us/Home.jsp and you will get the on-line application.  Once you get it confirmed you just need to send that confirmation to us for our records.  Be sure to keep going all the way to the end in order to receive the official certificate of clearance!  A copy of this clearance certificate must be included with your child abuse application below.  (It can all be done very quickly by email.  If you mail in the Criminal Background Records Check Policy, it may take 2-3 weeks to receive the certificate.) There is a $10 fee for this application.

For the Child Abuse Application
Once you have the criminal background check certificate, then go to http://www.dpw.state.pa.us/findaform/childabusehistoryclearanceforms/index.htm.  You can download the Child Abuse form there.  This application can NOT be done online - you MUST mail it in.  It usually takes 2-3 weeks to receive your clearances.  There is another $10 fee for this application.  (NOTE:  this $10 fee needs to be a money order.  You can get these at any local grocery store.  There is often a $1 fee to do so.  Don't forget to sign and fill out the money form before mailing it in.)

When you get the final clearances - please mail a copy of them to us at
T&E Care, PO Box 2111, Southeastern, PA 19399.  (You can also scan them and send them to us at information@tecare.org.)

Please note that both applications can be found on our Policies page.  Thanks for understanding our need for your help on this.

Special volunteer needs - drivers wanted!

Every summer T&E Care will be helping some local kids attend summer camp by covering their tuition costs.  Most kids in our community get to go to overnight camps or Future Stars or art camp for a week or two (or more), and then go on a vacation as well.  Fun stuff!  But many of the kids in the families we support just sit home day after day throughout the summer - no camp and certainly no vacation.  Paying for a week or two of camp is a special treat!  We also like to offer help with transportation for some of these kids.  The parents work, or they don't even own a car, and even if we pay for the camp - the kids still can't get there.  Each year we have about a dozen kids who needed rides - all to local camps - so it doesn't take a lot of volunteers.  If you could help out as a camp driver - please send a note to us at camp@tecare.org.  We will collect names, and then once we get the schedules for the kids (in May or early June) we'll try to match up your availability with the required dates.

Please note that all drivers need appropriate insurance and will be required to get a child abuse and a criminal background check.  (See above for information on these requirements.)

Possible Home Make-over Projects

Some families are living in homes that need many repairs, with no way to afford them.  As we work with some of these families, we hope to offer help fixing up their homes.  If you have any skills related to home repair:  painting, plumbing, electrical, general contractor, etc. we'd love to hear from you.  If we identify a particular family needing support, then we'll contact you for assistance.  If you are just a regular person who would love to offer assistance for one of these projects - we'd love to hear from you, too!  There are all sorts of ways that everyone can help out!  Thanks!

T/E FITNESS-BASED MENTORING PROGRAM
ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

If you...
  • Are looking for a way to "give back"
  • Want to really impact the life of a T/E student
  • Value health & fitness

Be a Mentor with the Friend Fitness Program - housed at our own UMLY!

While not exactly "volunteering for T&E Care" - this program helps lots of kids in the TESD as well and we refer kids to them.  You can help kids (grades 6-12) to develop a strong work ethic (character), build mental toughness (resilience, perseverance) and master goal setting skills through intense weekly workouts.

Students are referred to Friend Fitness by school counselors and parents because they would benefit from the additional support of a positive & caring adult role model.   Friend Fitness has been offered free-of-charge locally over the last 10 years through a partnership with the T/E School District, Upper Main Line YMCA and the Youth Mentoring Partnership.

The program takes place after-work and is designed to accommodate working professionals!  Sessions meet on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings.  For more information or to offer to become a mentor, contact Chris Major at Chris@youthmp.org or call 610-249-9631.  Go to www.youthmp.org to read more about this exciting program.  The more mentors they have - the more local kids they can help!!!
